Nov 05, 2017 am - Today's New Testament Lesson is usually called The Last Supper. I have no objection to the name-as long as you remember it is only the Last Supper of the Old Covenant. Passover was a distinctly Old Covenant meal, and in the next few days, the Old Covenant (with all its glories) would pass away in favor of the New Covenant (and its much richer glories). It would have been a great blessing to be at table with our Lord that night, but just this morning-less than an hour ago-we enjoyed an even greater blessing, when we met, around another table, to remember and celebrate the Lord's Supper. The meal He and His disciples shared that night combined the joy of the Great Passover, and the hope of a Passover even greater. The meal was divided into two parts: (a) Passover, vv.17-24, and (b) Lord's Supper, vv.25-30. We'll look at each in turn, see what they have in common, how they differ, and how both point to the- Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! THE SETTING Matthew begins in his customary way, by setting the scene. It is- The First Day of Unleavened Bread, .that is, Passover.
