Matthew 26:14-15
Oct 29, 2017 am - In the first fifteen verses of Chapter 26, Matthew provides a study in contrast. In vv.1-13, he presents a woman of rare spiritual beauty, Mary of Bethany, the sister of Martha and Lazarus. Unlike His disciples, this dear lady had been listening to Jesus, and knew He was about to die. The prospect filled her heart with sorrow, of course, but the grief did not paralyze her. Knowing she had very little time to serve Him, she took the time she had, and anointed His head with oil, with a perfume that-by today's standards-cost her something like $40,000. The disciples thought she had wasted her money on Christ, but our Lord knew nothing done for Him was a waste, and rebuking the men, added- Wherever this Gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her. We have no idea what Mary looked like on the outside, but, on the inside, I believe she was the most beautiful woman who ever lived, and the Resurrection, I think, will confirm my belief. Whether she was the most beautiful or not, she was certainly a woman of exceptional beauty. This is the picture Matthew paints in the first part of our Chapter.
