Matthew 26:6-13
Oct 15, 2017 am - I'm going to name eleven women in the Bible and ask you what they have in common: Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Abigail, Bathsheba, Tamar, Abishag, Esther, Jemimah, Keziah, and Keren-Happuch. Have you got it? What the women have in common is beauty, outward, physical beauty. Sarah was beautiful enough to catch a king's eye-in her 70's! Esther won an international beauty pageant, and as for the last three- In all the land were found no women so beautiful as the daughters of Job. What Solomon said of his unnamed lover, could be said of these women as well- You are all fair, my love, There is no spot in you. The New Testament introduces us to another cast of women, but not one of them is described as fair in face or figure. This may be because not one of them was. Or, more likely, because the New Testament emphasizes another kind of beauty, the fairness of soul, the beauty. of holiness. This is what we have in today's New Testament Lesson, a woman of surpassing beauty. Was she young and shapely? Old and shapeless? Somewhere in-between? We have no idea.
