Sep 24, 2017 am - Like most kids growing up in church, I didn't always listen to the sermon. I didn't listen, sometimes, because the preacher was boring, or because he preached too long, or because I'd heard it all before. If confession is good for the soul, I'll soon be a better man: I didn't always listen to the sermon. But, if the pastor wanted me to listen, all he had to do was say three words: The Great Tribulation. If he said that, I was all ears! Why wouldn't I be? We all want to know the future, especially if it's full of exciting things, such as- Wars and rumors of war, pestilence, famine, earthquakes, and, of course, carcasses! This is the kind of sermon that keeps a fat boy awake in church. And not only fat boys! Matthew 24 uses that term (in v.24) and ones like it is several other places. The same story is told in Mark 13 and Luke 21, but-except for one verse-we'll stick to Matthew's version of what scholars call- The Olivet Discourse. THE SETTING It's called The Olivet Discourse because it was spoken on the Mount of Olives, overlooking the Temple in Jerusalem, no more than a day or two before the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
