Jul 09, 2017 pm - What is sin? The Westminster Shorter Catechism defines it as- Any want of conformity to, or transgression of, the Law of God. The wording is a bit archaic, but the meaning is clear enough. There are two ways to sin: You can either do what God has told you not to do (murder, for example, or steal, lie, or take His Name in vain), or you can not do what God tells you to do (such as pray, love your neighbor, or meditate on His word). In thinking about sin, we typically think more often of the former than the latter. We take our transgressions of the Law of God far more seriously than we do our want (or lack) of conformity to it. We're all this way because it is much easier to catch yourself doing wrong than it is to catch yourself not doing right. I feel much less convicted about wasting time, for instance, than I do about gossiping or giving in to mean and hateful thoughts. But when I read the Bible, I find commands against all of the above. The Apostle who tells me to- Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. .Also tells me to- Redeem the time.
