Jul 24, 2016 pm - My talk this afternoon is on the doctrine of Common Grace. Common Grace is not a major doctrine in the Bible, but it's worth knowing about because it throws light on major doctrines, answers many puzzling questions, and tells us how we ought to live in a sinful world. THE MEANING What is Common Grace? One of the words you understand very well, I hope, and that's the word, Grace. In the Bible, grace means the favor of God, and when it comes to sinners, it means His unmerited favor; the favor we did not earn, might have forfeited, but nonetheless have. Ephesians 2:8-9 is its best known occurrence in the New Testament, but deserves to be known better- For by grace you are saved, through faith, and that not of yourself, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. Grace means 'God's favor', His unmerited favor, and includes His mercy, patience, generosity, and so on. On this point, I think we're pretty well informed. The second word, however, is not as well known, Common. What does this mean? When connected to Grace, it means God's universal goodness, His patience with everyone, His mercy to all, His generosity to the whole creation, from man to animal, to plant, ... More >>>
