TEXT:
SUBJECT: In Remembrance of Christ
The Lord’s Supper is eaten and drunk in remembrance of Christ. In remembering what He did for us, we also remember who did it. Who’s body was broken for us? Who’s blood was shed for the remission of our sins? In a word, it was the King who suffered and died for us.
Jesus Christ was born King of the Jews. His royal birth was celebrated by men and angels and soon feared by the man who thought he himself was king. Although He was a poor man and spent most of His life in obscurity, Jesus lived like the King He is. He ruled His people in wisdom and love; He fought their enemies tooth and nail; and when our enemies were finally gathered against us, it was our King who led the charge and suffered the fatal blow.
Then God raised Him from the dead and made good on His claim. ‘Thou art My Son, this day have I begotten You’. And now, though the nations still rage against God and the peoples imagine vain things about unseating Him Him, the Lord sits up in heaven laughing them to scorn. Why? Because whatever they say or do, He ‘has set His King on the holy hill of Zion’.
Consequently, God’s Rule on earth is secure: Because the King—our Lord Jesus Christ—is holding it in His invincible hands. Can Christ be beaten? He cannot be. For when all the dark lords joined forces to destroy Him, it was they who were destroyed. I am He who was dead and am now alive and live forevermore. And have the keys of death, hell, and the grave.
It is the King we remember at His Table. The King who did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.
