SUBJECT: The Man Christ Jesus

There is one God and One Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.

Man is separated from God. We are human and He is Divine. The gap will never be closed and that’s fine with us. We do not dream of Divinity, but are content with being creatures and honored to be the only ones made in the Image of our Creator.

It is the other separation that troubles us. We were made in His fellowship and we can never be happy outside of it. But we are outside of it, because of our sins that have separated us from the Lord.

Long ago, men tried to bridge the gap between themselves and God. They began work on a great temple with a spire that would reach up to heaven. The genius and the labor of the whole human race were behind the great work, but it failed—and the building site was called Babel or Confusion, for there God confounded man’s attempt to bridge the gap from below.

The work needed doing, but only God is able to do it. Instead of reaching up for God, it is He who reaches down for us. He did not make us gods so we would rise to heaven, He made His Son Man that He might sink to earth. And sink He did. He was born into a poor family when His nation was at its lowest ebb. He suffered in His home and then in the wilderness, in a public ministry, and finally, on the cross where He was crucified in the place of sinners. On the third day, He rose again, and took us with Him!

The distance between God and man has been bridged. Not by us, but by God Himself in Christ the only Mediator between God and men.

It is Him we meet this day at His table.
