TEXT: Luke 18:16
SUBJET: Parents cannot save their children
"Suffer the little children come to Me and do not forbid them, for of such is the Kingdom of God".
This verse is often applied to the baptism of children, but wrongly so. It has them coming to Christ--not to the baptistery. A thing far better. We're happy to have this young man come for baptism; we're happier he has come to Christ.
Parents cannot save their children. We can be a means of grace. How?
1.We can tell them they are lost without Christ. And that being lost is a terrible thing to be. We mustn't tell them harshly, but with the tenderest affection. Nor should we speak proudly, but in remembrance of what we once were. "Without God and without hope in the world".
2.We can practice general discipline. Unbelief is folly--the greatest folly. One way that folly is driven from our children is "the rod of correction". Faith requires hearing the Word--listening to it. Yet children don't naturally listen, do they? But "correcting" them "gives you rest" from their noisy ways, and enables them to hear that "engrafted Word" and "receive" it too.
3.We can foster a respect for God. "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom..." This is done, chiefly, by example. Do our children hear us speaking of God often and with deep reverence? Do they see us submitting to His will, even when it contradicts our own? Are they allowed to watch movies which take the Lord's name in vain? How strange it is that some words will bring an R rating to a movie--but "God", "Lord", "Jesus", "Christ", and so on, are not among them. And they're the only words that matter!
4.We can preach the Gospel to them in all it freeness. This means we must rid our message of everything that smacks of "Do this and live". The Gospel is not what we do for Christ, but what He did for us. I challenge you to go home this afternoon, and ask your children--point blank--"What is the Gospel?" You might be surprised.
5.We can show them how wonderful it is to be a believer in Christ. The Gospel is not designed to make us grim and negative, but to make us free to serve God with joy and passion. Do your children see this? Or do they infer from your life "What a drag it is getting saved?"
6.We can pray for them. Parents should do this individually, together, and as a family. We should also seek their good in the prayer meeting, and meet with others to pray for our children. Who knows? Maybe we "Have not because we ask not?"
This is not a complete study of the issue, of course. But I hope it's helpful. I hope it will stimulate you--and me--to be faithful in the rearing of our children. And in their evangelizing too. God so bless it, for Christ's sake. Amen.
